TPU 3D Printing: Flexible Parts That Actually Work
How to design and order flexible TPU parts: shore hardness explained, real use cases from gaskets to grips, and the design rules that make rubber-like prints succeed.
Rubber Parts Without Molds
TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) brings elastomer behavior to FDM: parts that bend, stretch, compress, and bounce back. Before printable TPU, a custom gasket or grip meant cutting sheet stock or paying for a silicone mold; now it means uploading a file. TPU parts absorb vibration, seal against surfaces, survive repeated flexing, and grip like rubber — and they do it in geometry no die-cut sheet can match.
Shore Hardness, Decoded
Flexibility is specified by shore hardness. Printing TPUs typically span Shore 85A to 95A — roughly skateboard-wheel to shoe-sole territory. Practical intuition:
- Shore 85A: soft — squeezable grips, vibration dampers, high-stretch bands.
- Shore 90A: the versatile middle — gaskets, seals, protective bumpers, phone-case feel.
- Shore 95A: firm flex — casters, belts, hinged covers, parts that flex but hold shape under load.
- Below 85A printed parts get gummy and slow to print; if you need truly soft (50-70A), our Flexible SLA resin covers that range with finer detail.
What TPU Parts Are Used For
The recurring winners across customer orders:
- Gaskets and seals cut to exact housing geometry, including 3D sealing paths flat sheet can never follow.
- Vibration isolators: motor mounts, camera dampers, feet for equipment that walks across benches.
- Protective covers and bumpers for corners, edges, and handheld device drops.
- Grips and overmold-style sleeves for tools and handles.
- Belts, rollers, and drive wheels for light machinery.
- Wearable contact parts: straps, buckles, padding interfaces.
Design Rules for Flexible Parts
Flexible design thinking differs from rigid-part habits:
- Wall thickness IS the stiffness dial: a 1mm TPU wall flexes freely; 3mm resists like firm rubber. Tune behavior with geometry, not just material choice.
- Compression seals want 15-25% squish: size gasket cross-sections so assembly compresses them meaningfully.
- Avoid knife-edge features; flexible thin edges tear. Radius everything.
- Living hinges work beautifully — 0.6-1.0mm webs survive thousands of cycles.
- Holes stretch: fastener holes in TPU should be 5-10% undersize so bolts seat snugly.
Why TPU Is a Service Material
TPU is notoriously finicky on consumer printers — flexible filament buckles in fast extruders and strings badly with wrong retraction. Our machines run direct-drive extruders profiled for flexibles, which is why customer TPU parts arrive clean, dimensional, and consistent. Specify the shore hardness you need (or describe the feel and duty; we'll match it), pick a color, and treat flexible parts as ordinary orders.

Upload the model, select TPU under FDM materials, and the quote is instant. If you're unsure between TPU and Flexible SLA resin for a fine-detailed soft part, quote both — the geometry usually decides.
